OwnPhone update: new version YOS 15.0 brings improved security, Ubuntu Touch and better control over microG
The OwnPhone has received a new system update: YOS 15.0.
With this update we continue to build on what matters most to us:
security, privacy and a user-friendly phone where your data truly belongs to you.
The update is based on the latest version of Volla OS and includes several improvements. Some are directly noticeable, while others work quietly in the background to keep your device secure and stable.
These are the most important changes.
Ubuntu Touch available as a second operating system
With this update it is now possible to use Ubuntu Touch as a second operating system.
Ubuntu Touch is a fully Linux-based mobile operating system that operates independently from the ecosystems of Apple and Google.
For users who want maximum control over their digital environment, this provides an additional option alongside the standard system.
This fits perfectly with the vision of YourData Network:
technology should adapt to you, not the other way around.
OwnPhone users can watch this instruction video to see how Ubuntu Touch can be installed and used alongside YOS.
Better control over microG
This update resolves an issue related to microG, an open-source alternative to the Google services that many Android apps normally require to function properly.
On a typical Android phone, these Google services run continuously in the background and regularly send data to Google. microG offers a different approach: it allows apps to continue working without requiring the official Google services.
In some cases, microG could become active again after the security mode was changed. This has now been fixed in this update.
This means that:
your privacy settings remain exactly as you configured them
microG will no longer activate unexpectedly
you retain full control over which services run on your device
The benefit for users is simple: apps can work when you want them to, without automatically relying on Google services.
Android security update – February 2026
YOS 15.0 also includes the latest Android Security Update from February 2026.
This update fixes several known vulnerabilities in the Android platform and ensures that your device remains protected against recent security risks.
For us, this is essential. A privacy phone should not only be free from tracking, but also secure and up to date.
Small improvements that make a difference
In addition to these three key updates, the release also includes several smaller improvements to system apps and system services.
You may not notice them directly, but they help ensure that:
- the system remains stable
- features continue to run smoothly
- your OwnPhone remains reliable in everyday use
Step by step, we continue building a secure and stable alternative to Big Tech smartphones.
